Since the day I picked up the Alpha history book ( and that was before I went on line), I have been madly in love with Alpha's history. I was initiated on April 4 1982 into Iota Chapter at Morris Brown College. Ironically, it was the anniversary of the assassination of Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. By August of the same year I was President of the chapter. As a college chapter president, we were very involved in many activities on campus and in the community. I have been running in Alpha ever since. In the Spring of 1983, the chapter was named Georgia College Chapter of the Year. I began going to Eta Lambda meetings as an undergraduate and became involved immediately.
Serving as President of Iota Chapter placed me in contact with many stalwarts of Alpha in Atlanta and our mentoring chapter Eta Lambda. After graduation from Morris Brown College in 1984, I immediately joined Eta Lambda and have been active since that time. My first year as a member of the chapter, I was assigned to work on the Eta Lambda Historical Committee with Brother Daughtry Thomas, A.J. Lewis and Father H.J.C.Bowden. Within a few years, the work of the committee was placed in my lap. I published a pictorial history of Eta Lambda Chapter. Prior to that time, General President Charles Teamer appointed me to work on the Communications Committee and I wrote articles for the daily convention Newsletter. A few years later, General President Milton Davis appointed me as the fraternity's first National Archivist and during that time, we transferred the fraternity's archives to the Moorland Spingarn Research Center at Howard University. As the Historian for the Southern Region, I published the history of the Southern Region as well. During General President Davis's term, I curated several fraternal exhibits on Charles Harris Wesley and John Hope Franklin.
On the local level, I have served as Chaplain, Historian, Founders Day Chair, Membership Intake Committee, Project Alpha Co-Chair. I served as the District Chaplain and Chair of the Southern Region Historical Commission.
As the President of Eta Lambda Chapter in Atlanta, Georgia, I led one of Alpha's largest and most active chapters. During my tenure, the fraternal spirit was high. Membership numbers increased. I took great pride in attending to the needs of all brothers especially our Senior Brothers and new brothers to the chapter. We had listening sessions to hear the concerns of all brothers and used that as our basis for planning the agenda to meet the needs of our constituents, the brothers. Our programs were effective and meaningful. The public's awareness of the good of Alpha increased through our annual Public Programs and contributions to several worthwhile causes in the Atlanta community were made. The chapter contributed over $50,000 to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Project. I am most proud of the fact that during my administration, a tenant was acquired for the Alpha Community Center, which led to the sale of the center for 1.3 million dollars.
In 24 years of membership, I have attended 23 General Conventions only missing my first convention in 1982, because I was not informed that there was one. I have attended the Inaugurations of General Presidents Sutton, Teamer, Ponder, Davis, Wallace, Johnson and Matthews. My commitment to Alpha is solid. In the words of Past Executive Director James "Tiny" Blanton who said to me "Well Skip you don't miss anything. If the Alphas have an event in Hell, I guess you will be there too!" My response, "Absolutely!"
